WRANGLER (TJ) STORY




Considered the ultimate escape vehicle. The 1997 model of the Jeep Wrangler (TJ) offered preferred outstanding on-road handling and legendary off-road capability. The new 1997 Jeep Wrangler won the prestigious "4x4 of the Year".


The new Wrangler had a retro look, very similar to the CJ-7, but was very different from the mechanical point of view. Almost 80 percent of the vehicle parts were newly designed. Starting with basic Wrangler platform, the Jeep engineers overhauled the most complete since evolved into the MB Quad.

The biggest change in the engineering of TJ was the new Quadra-Coil suspension, replacing the standard springs and offered a ride on the road much better. The road capabilities were enhanced with higher ground clearance and angles of approach and departure more aggressive. The TJ also had a new interior that included airbags for driver and passenger.

The TJ retained several classic Jeep features such as round headlights (not square) folding windshield (first seen in 1940) and removable doors, plus the option of a soft top or removable hard top. A factory-fitted sport bar was also standard. The engine is the same AMC TJ 4.0L 6-cylinder used in the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee.

TJ Wrangler line received rave reviews since its debut and has proven to be an extremely adaptable vehicle, with a growing variety of aftermarket performance parts available.

In 2003, Jeep introduced the Wrangler brand most capable of all time: Rubicon. The Wrangler Unlimited debuted in 2004 with a longer wheelbase, 13 inches more cargo room and more comfortable road handling.
