Even after so many from birth, the origin of the name Jeep is unknown. Many claim that the cartoon series "Popeye" and a character "Eugene the Jeep" that could overcome any obstacle, is responsible for the name.

Others believe that the name Jeep was used in Oklahoma, in 1934,to designate a truck used for the extraction of oil and hence comesthe name of the brand.

However, the story with greater force in establishing the origin of the name, is the evil pronouncement stands for General Purpose (allpurpose): Gee Pee English.

In different parts of the world the vehicle was given other names and nicknames. The Russians called it "The Goat", the Russian equivalent to the expression "go through anywhere." Mexican troopsgave the name of "cockroach". It happened that there was aChinese word that sounded like Jeep and meaning "Man Recio", sothat the Chinese had an appropriate nickname for the vehicle, without having to invent it.
