The Origins of the Name Jeep

The most accepted is from the cartoon of the 1930's, Popeye the Sailor, which featured a character named Eugene the Jeep, one yellow pet like a dog with supernatural powers, and American soldiers attributed these powers to the Jeep. During World War II, this version is accompanied by a less imaginative, which attributes the name to the initials GP, General Purpose, under which the U.S. Army organized the competition to provide themselves with a small four-wheeled utility vehicle. The reason why these versions are confused and debate is ultimately the way it is written: It is said that the Jeep name pronunciation is reduced to the acronym G. P, namely Pi Yi.
